The Middle Muscles In - New York Times

The attached article from poll watcher David Brooks is from yesterday's NY Times. If you were to read but one article about this election, this should be the one. David Brooks points out that this was an election victory for the center, rejecting the un-American extremism that controls each of the major parties and the apparent incompetence in the White House and do-nothingness and corruption in Congress of the ruling party (Machiavelli: "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely"). And as Brooks concludes this article, "The country is hungering for leaders like [Lee Hamilton]: open-minded, unassuming centrists who are interested in government more than politics".

Lets see if the "old" Democrats who now control both houses of Congress (they got those positions through seniority, after all) can curb, for the good of the country, their shrill, populist and contrary instincts developed over long careers, OR move aside for younger and more moderate elements of their party. Let 2008 begin in earnest on a lofty plane, not a low one!
